The village of Amsterdam on the east bank of the Big Black River was the head of navigation on the river during the Civil War era. The village, which is no longer extant, was thus an important local point.

This site has local significance because of its association with military activities and events that achieved or affected important local objectives of the Vicksburg campaign.
