Confederate Brig. Gen. Stephen D. Lee's Alabama Infantry Brigade occupied a position along the ridge near the Alfred Ingraham farm house after withdrawing from Willows a few minutes earlier. The intention was to block Union interference with the withdrawal of the Grand Gulf Force across the Big Black River at Hankinson's Ferry. Shortly after deployment was complete, Union Brig. Gen. Marcellus Crocker's division arrived, deployed, and began a slow and methodical advance, which Lee's brigade resisted bitterly. Badly outnumbered, Lee slowly withdrew to the north across Kenison Creek, and occupied a much stronger position along the ridge north of the creek. Here he was joined by Col. Francis Cockrell's Missouri Infantry Brigade.
