As
part of the Confederate defense of the lower Arkansas River troops were
stationed at the Smith Plantation. Among the troops at the plantation
were men under Henry Merrell who attempted to block the river with abatis.
Presumably, "Smith's Cutoff" is in close proximity to this
site.

This
site has local significance because it is associated with military activities
and events that achieved or affected important local objectives of the
Vicksburg campaign.

The
site should be documented through the use of land records. Onsite interpretation
and connecting the site to the Vicksbuurg Heritage Coalition is encouraged.
