Resources, Power and Politics: WWII and its Aftermath
Monday, June 9, 2014 to Wednesday, July 11, 2014
World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument (VALR), in partnership with the Office of Curriculum, Instruction and Student Support (OCISS), Curriculum and Instruction Branch (CIB), Social Studies Program, will be offering the following workshop for 25 high school social studies classroom teachers.
Title: Resources, Power and Politics: WWII and its Aftermath
Description: This workshop will introduce teachers to the events that led America into World War II, the war's effect from economic, political, geographic, and historical perspectives, and how women and ethnic minorities affected and were affected by the war, as well as effective techniques, powerful online tools, and standards-based content and pedagogy for immediate use in the classroom. VALR will provide in-depth training on site-based learning and the use of oral histories in the classroom.
Dates: June 9-11, 2014 (All participants)
June 12, 2014 (Optional bonus day)

Time: 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

All participants must obtain their principal's or administrator's approval prior to registering. (By May 19, 2014.)

A deeper understanding of the events that led America into World War II and their effects from economic, political, geographic, and historical perspectives;
A deeper understanding of how women and ethnic minorities (e.g., African Americans, Filipinos, Pacific islanders, etc.) affected and were affected by World War II;
A deeper understanding of using engagement strategies and formative instruction in lesson plan development;
A deeper understanding of Common Core State Standards in Literacy for History/Social Studies, including digital literacy tools in lesson plan development; and
A deeper understanding of using the "College, Career, and Civic Life (C3) Framework for Social Studies State Standards" in lesson plan development.
