Friends Lecture Series at the Chapel
7 PM in the Washington Memorial Chapel: Bishop White Library, featuring Dr. David Robarge, Chief Historian, CIA
"Secret Revolution: How the Patriots Used Intelligence to Help Win the War for Independence"
Intelligence work is as American as cherry pie and as old as the Republic. Civilian and military leaders of the American Revolution used espionage, covert action, counterintelligence, deception, and cryptanalysis to offset the British army’s advantage in men and arms and help win the fight for independence. The techniques they used were remarkably sophisticated by today’s standards. There much more to the secret side of the Revolution than Nathan Hale and Benedict Arnold.
About the speaker: David Robarge received his Ph.D. in American History from Columbia University. He joined the CIA in 1989 and became a political and leadership analyst on the Middle East, then moved to the CIA History Staff in 1996. He was appointed Chief Historian in 2005. Dr. Robarge’s articles and book reviews on CIA leaders, counterintelligence, intelligence in the American Revolution, covert action, and technical collection have appeared in Studies in Intelligence, Intelligence and National Security, and The Journal of Intelligence History. He has taught intelligence history at George Mason University in Virginia and also written a biography of Chief Justice John Marshall.
