Kate Hammond named Superintendent of Valley Forge National Historical Park
National Park Service Northeast Regional Director Dennis R. Reidenbach has named Kate Hammond as the next Superintendent of Valley Forge National Historical Park in Pennsylvania. Hammond will also supervise the Superintendent of Hopewell Furnace National Historic Site in Elverson, Pennsylvania.

George Washington was 46 years old before he ever partied on his birthday. This year, the party’s even bigger as Valley Forge National Historical Park continues the tradition during Presidents Day weekend, February 17 - 20.

Epic March-in to Valley Forge Re-enacted December 19
Two hundred and thirty four years later, on Monday, December 19, Valley Forge National Historical Park will commemorate this epic March-in with Dean Malissa as George Washington, The Historical Harmonies – Colonial Revelers and costumed park rangers, historical interpreters and volunteers.

VFNHP Initiates the Second Year of White-tailed Deer Management
Valley Forge National Historical Park will conduct the second year of the lethal reduction phase of the White-tailed Deer Management Plan/Environmental Impact Statement (plan) beginning in November 2011 and extending through March 2012.

Norristown High School Students Learn While Biking
A group of Norristown High School students took a trek through history recently. The eleven students, all members of the Montgomery County Community College TRIO Upward Bound program, participated in a Youth Heritage Trek that included a bike ride along the Schuylkill River Trail and a tour of Valley Forge National Historical Park. They also lent park rangers a hand by performing an invasive crayfish removal at Valley Creek.

Thunderous musket and cannon fire echoed across Valley Forge in May of 1778, but instead of signaling vicious combat, it represented joyous celebration of a young America’s strategic and fruitful friendship with France.

Junior Ranger Day set for April 23 at Valley Forge Park
On Saturday, April 23, children can explore Valley Forge’s vast terrain, learn about Washington’s 1777-78 winter encampment and earn Junior Ranger badges at Valley Forge National Historical Park. The events are part of National Junior Ranger Day, a celebration held at many national parks around the country.

Party for Washington this Presidents Day Weekend at Valley Forge Birthday Cake, Colonial Singers, Re-enactors and Boy Scouts Among the Fun
Valley Forge was the first place George Washington ever celebrated his birthday, and the party continues there this Presidents Day weekend, February 19-21. The festivities include free slices of birthday cake, Colonial singers and an appearance by the General, himself.

Valley Forge National Historical Park Initiates Actions Associated with the White-tailed Deer Management Plan/Environmental Impact Statement
Valley Forge National Historical Park will conduct the lethal reduction phase of the White-tailed Deer Management Plan/Environmental Impact Statement (plan) beginning in November 2010 through March 2011. The plan addresses browsing of tree and shrub seedlings by an increasing deer population over the last two decades which has prevented the ability of native forests to grow and mature and has reduced habitat for a range of native wildlife species.

Volunteers to Lend a Hand During National Public Lands Day
Volunteers are invited to dig in and spruce up Valley Forge National
Historical Park on Saturday, September 25, 2010 in celebration of National Public Lands Day.The annual event, now in its 17th year, is the nation’s largest hands-on volunteer effort to improve and enhance the nation’s 600 million acres of public lands. Activities at Valley Forge begin at 8:30 a.m. with walk in registration and volunteer sign-in.

NPS Announces Acquisition of Historic Pawling Farm

A land transfer that protects 78 acres of historic land in Valley Forge National Historical Park has been completed. The land and its historic resources will be completely preserved; its natural habitat will be restored; and it will be opened to all as high quality open space.

National Trails Day promotes the relationship between good health and trails. “National Trails Day is an opportunity to explore Park trails, get connected, give back and reap the health benefits of an active lifestyle,” said Park Superintendent Michael A. Caldwell.

Lew Rogers has been named the new Superintendent of Petersburg Battlefield!
National Park Service Northeast Regional Director Dennis R. Reidenbach has named Lewis Rogers superintendent of Petersburg National Battlefield. Rogers, who is currently chief ranger for Valley Forge National Historical Park in Pennsylvania, will assume his duties in May.

Proposed Settlement Reached for Park Asbestos Clean-up
For many years, 112 acres at the heart of Valley Forge NHP have been closed to the public, contaminated by asbestos and other toxic materials. A proposed settlement for cleaning it up has been reached, and public comment is sought.
