United States Park Police Successfully Negotiate with Suicidal Subject

On Friday, March 16, 2001, at approximately 8:45 a.m. the United States Park Police received a telephone call from a subject who stated that his wife was suicidal and on her way to the park area at Great Falls, Maryland in a vehicle.  Several units from the U.S. Park Police responded to the park and located the unoccupied vehicle in the parking lot.  A short time later U.S. Park Police Officer Christopher Curtin located the subject at the water’s edge near Great Falls Inn (Lock#20) threatening to end her life.  The U.S. Park Police deployed Eagle # 1 and several of its Crisis Negotiators.  Assistance was also provided by National Park Service Rangers and Cabin John Fire/Rescue.  Sergeant Kathy Harasek, a member of the U.S. Park Police Aviation Unit and a trained Crisis Negotiator, was onboard Eagle #1.  Sergeant Harasek, who departed the helicopter on the ground, and Officer Curtin coordinated efforts to establish a dialogue with the suicidal subject; as a result negotiations were successful.  The female was then safely transported to a local hospital for treatment.
