U.S. Park Police Information for the Million Family March

Street Closures

The following streets administered by the National Park Service will be closed at 12:00 a.m. on Monday, October 16, 2000, in conjunction with the Million Family March:

·         Jefferson Drive and Madison Drive – between 3rd and 14th Streets

·         Henry Bacon Drive – between Lincoln Memorial Circle and Constitution Avenue

·         The Washington Monument parking area (16th Street Oval)

·         The Ellipse – closed to thru traffic

·         Constitution Avenue – between 15th and 17th Streets (depending on crowd size)

It is anticipated that a large number of people will attend this event, causing many area roadways to become extremely congested.  Use of mass transit is strongly recommended.

 

Media Logistics

The following provisions have been made for media satellite/microwave truck parking on the National Mall, the Ellipse, and at the Lincoln Memorial beginning at 12:00 a.m. on October 16:            

·         Madison Drive between 3rd and 14th Streets.  *south curb lane only*

·         Henry Bacon Drive between the Lincoln Memorial Circle and Constitution Avenue.  *east curb lane only*

·         Constitution Avenue entrance to the Ellipse (5 spaces only)

These areas will be barricaded and official press credentials are required to gain access.   These areas are for Satellite and Microwave trucks only; crew vehicles will not be allowed to park in these areas.  Spaces are available on a “first come, first serve” basis.

 

Vending regulations

Numerous locations in the downtown area, outside of National Park Service areas, have been designated for vending.  Vending is prohibited in National Park Service areas except when properly authorized/permitted through the NPS.

During this event, news agencies may obtain law enforcement information regarding U.S. Park Police activities by calling the United States Park Police Command Center Media Line at (202) 619-7161 between 6:00 a.m. and 10:00 p.m.  Please remember that the United States Park Police no longer provide crowd estimates.
