Process to become a Park Police officer:

The
Written examination is
required, you must pass with a 70% score or higher.

The
Physical examination (you
must be able to maintain good physical condition throughout
your career). One of the most difficult challenges
for both candidates and recruits are the physical requirements
of the Police Officer examination and the Police Academy. Physical
conditioning is stressed because of the physical demands
placed upon officers in the field.

The
Medical examination requires you to explain
and provide documentation on all previous injuries,
surgeries, and illnesses. The examination will consist
of a height and weight check, complete blood screen
and urinalysis, spirometry or PFT (Lung capacity
test), PPD (TB skin test), a complete vision and
hearing examination, and chest x-ray.

The
background investigation includes
fingerprinting, photographs, and a background interview. The
investigative phase of the background process includes
a thorough check of police records, personal, military
and histories, as well as reference checks.

Satisfactorily
complete an oral interview. The interview is a behavior-based
review of your personal history, and provides evaluation
of your problem-solving abilities, respect for diversity,
community service orientation, role adaptability, communications
ability, and motivation.

Satisfactorily
complete the prescribed training required for recruits
after appointment.

Satisfactorily
complete a probationary period of one year.

Newly
appointed officers are covered under the Federal Employee
Retirement Systems (FERS) and are eligible for retirement
at age 50 after 20 years of service or at any age with 25
years of service.
