Hiring Process to become a Park Police officer:

  • The Written examination is required, you must pass with a 70% score or higher.

  • The Physical examination (you must be able to maintain good physical condition throughout your career).  One of the most difficult challenges for both candidates and recruits are the physical requirements of the Police Officer examination and the Police Academy.  Physical conditioning is stressed because of the physical demands placed upon officers in the field.

  • The Medical examination requires you to explain and provide documentation on all previous injuries, surgeries, and illnesses. The examination will consist of a height and weight check, complete blood screen and urinalysis, spirometry or PFT (Lung capacity test), PPD (TB skin test), a complete vision and hearing examination, and chest x-ray.

  • The background investigation includes fingerprinting, photographs, and a background interview.  The investigative phase of the background process includes a thorough check of police records, personal, military and histories, as well as reference checks.

  • Satisfactorily complete an oral interview. The interview is a behavior-based review of your personal history, and provides evaluation of your problem-solving abilities, respect for diversity, community service orientation, role adaptability, communications ability, and motivation.

  • Satisfactorily complete the prescribed training required for recruits after appointment.

  • Satisfactorily complete a probationary period of one year.

  • Newly appointed officers are covered under the Federal Employee Retirement Systems (FERS) and are eligible for retirement at age 50 after 20 years of service or at any age with 25 years of service.
