SART is a partnership of both private and public community agencies who work to coordinate an immediate, high quality, multi-disciplinary, victim/survivor-centered response to sexual assault cases. The SART members are committed to providing sensitve and compassionate care to sexual assault victims/survivors of crimes. The team understands that reporting a sexual assault can be one of the most difficult decisions a victim/survivor can make. |
The SANE program operates out of Howard
University Hospital, providing specially trained nurses and advocates
on-call 24-hours a day. When an adult rape survivor contacts the police,
the on-call SANE nurse and advocate are notified to meet the survivor
at the hospital within one hour. The survivor receives support and information
about the process from the advocate and is promptly examined by the SANE
nurse. |

* SANE provides services
for victims/survivors of sexual assaults 24-hours a day. This shortens
waiting time and increases personalized attention and care for the victim/survivor.
* SANE nurses must complete 80 hours of specialized training. They provide a thorough, yet sensitive exam in a safe and private envoirment to the victim. *DC Rape Crisis Center advocates must have completed 60 hours of specialized training. They provide information and support and make sure the process stays survivor focused. * The SANE program, through the advocates, provides referrals and follow-up services and helps survivors with the crime victim compensation process. This helps the survivor deal with concerns after the immediate crisis. *The forensic evidence is collected in a thorough fashion, utilizing special evidence collection kits. If the case goes to trial, the SANE nurse will make a strong witness, given their training and experience. |

| Why is a S.A.R.T Important? |
||
*This partnership allows
for better communication among the police, prosecutors, advocates and
the hospital. It improves the process for reporting and prosecuting cases.
*This creates a mechanism to monitor the effectiveness of each agency's response and to promptly address problems in service delivery. *The SART assesses the effectiveness of current coordinated interventions. *The SART provides a timely victim-sensitive and coordinated response to sexual assaults. This can increase the likelihood that survivors will seek follow-up assistance and long-term support to promote healing, whether or not a formal police report is filed. * The team can work together to provide a coordinated effort to educate the community about sexual assaults and to help survivors reduce their risks and increase the number of prosecutions. |
