Description: Carl Lobe Park - replaced playground equipment, irrigation and landscaping improvements. Ridgemont Park - constructed pathways, replaced playground equipment, and landscaping improvements. Sunnyland Memorial Park - replaced picnic furniture, repaired pathways, and landscaping improvements. Battersby Field - restored track, repaired backstop, goal posts, and irrigation and landscaping improvements. Blodel Donovan Park Fieldhouse - renovated restrooms, dressing rooms, craft and meeting rooms. Replaced playground equipment at Elizabeth Park, Cornwall Park, Fairhaven Park. and Bloedel Donovan Park.

Project Name: Bellingham Maritime Heritage Center

Federal Share: $599,000

Fiscal Year: 1982

Description: An abandoned sewage treatment plant on Whatcom Creek was converted into an environmental education center and city park, focusing on maritime and city history, salmon propagation, and sport fishing. The interpretive facilities developed through this grant, which complement and fully explain an on-site salmon rearing operation, provides easy access and viewing for the visiting public and more than 7,500 school children who participate each year in environmental education programs. In addition, the park district utilizes the site as the focal point for its summer day camp program. In addition, an alternative high school for adjudicated students is located immediately adjacent to the Maritime Heritage Center. These students are actively engaged in an educational program to design and build boats and often launch their new watercraft from the center's shoreline

Description: Bloedel Donovan Park - renovated lighting system, parking area, ballfields, and landscaping improvements. Broadway Park - replaced playground equipment, and renovated the wading and spray pools. Watcom Falls Park - installed new playground equipment, and renovated the picnic shelters. Roosevelt Park - installed new playground equipment. Fairhaven Park - installed an automatic irrigation system, resurfaced ball courts, renovated parking lot, and replaced the lighting system. Elizabeth Park - renovated the wading and spray pool. Cornwall Park - constructed picnic shelters.

Theaters - Bathhouse, Poncho, and Pratt Fine Arts. Swimming Pools - Ballard, Evans, Meadowbrook, Medgar Evers, Queen Anne, and Southwest. Community Centers - Green Lake, Jefferson, Langston Hughes, Loyal Heights, Miller, Queen Anne, Rainer Beach, Rainer, and Van Asselt.

Description: Renovated four park areas along the Lake Washington shoreline. Madison Park - renovated bathhouse and shoreline improvements. Mount Baker Park - constructed a new bathhouse and life guard station, replaced swimming raft, repaired fishing pier, resurfaced ball court, and installed new playground equipment. Lake Washington Boulevard - beach fill, erosion control, renovated observation platform, and park furniture. Seward Park - renovated comfort station, picnic shleter, foot race starter area, and replaced swimming raft.

Description: Community Center - renovate playground equipment, picnic tables, spray plaza, shelter, restrooms, and lighting system. Upper Salishan - renovated basketball court, playgrund equipment, picnic tables, soccer goals, paths, irrigation system, trees and lighting.

Project Name: Natural High - Outdoor Adventure Program

Federal Share: $100,000

Fiscal Year: 1992

Description: Natural High is a year-round, outdoor adventure and sports program tailored to meet the needs of inner-city, at-risk youth. Educational workshops teach safety, new skills, environmental awareness and concern for wildlife. Activities include camping, canoeing, hiking, rafting, mountain biking and sailing. Natural High uses the outdoors as a classroom to teach young people respect for self and others. It teaches hands-on outdoor skills such as setting up tents, safely lighting cook-stoves and lanterns, and prevention of hypothermia. Other activities include cross-country skiing, camping, packpacking, sea kayaking, rafting, canoeing. Upon expiration of the UPARR grant, the program was funded through a Washington State Criminal Justice Grant and has received donated equipment and cash from local businesses. The program is now part of the city's annual budget. The program has received national recognition and was featured at a February 1995 colloquium at Fort Worth, Texas titled "Recreation for At-Risk Youth: programs that Work."

Description: Converted staff offices into a multi-purpose room, upgraded utility systems, roof repainting, renovated HVAC systems, renovated swimming pool, installed two adjustable backboards, and expanded the recreation room.
