Description: A coal bunker, abandoned on
the waterfront since the 1940s, because the new home of the
Boys and Girls Club. The bunker's large capacity and centralized
location drew people like a magnet. The 40 foot high, 320
feet long structure was made attractive by the fact that it
was sitting on city-owned land. After negotiating a 50-year
lease with the Boys and Girls Club, the city was awarded a
grant to enclose the bunker, replace the roof, install a roof-top
solar panel for hot water heating, install a roof-top playground,
and construct game and community rooms inside the bunker.
UPARR assistance was the incentive needed to encourage local
businesses and non-profit agencies to pitch in and provide
the remaining funds for complete adaptation of the bunker.
The former coal bunker is the premier youth serving facility.
It serves approximately 180 youths a day during the school
season, and over 400 a day during summer.

Recreation Program began in January, 1993. The program offered
basketball, football, arts and crafts, a reading club, tutoring,
homework studies, a summer camp. The program served youth,
ages 8 to 13, averaging 125 per day. Local public and private
partnerships were developed through the program between the
city parks and recreation department, education department,
neighborhood volunteers, and local businesses who provided
refreshments and prizes at program functions. High school
students from a local technical education program volunteered
tutoring assistance during homework and studies program.
