Project Name: Adaptive Reuse - Jersey City Coal Bunker

Description: A coal bunker, abandoned on the waterfront since the 1940s, because the new home of the Boys and Girls Club. The bunker's large capacity and centralized location drew people like a magnet. The 40 foot high, 320 feet long structure was made attractive by the fact that it was sitting on city-owned land. After negotiating a 50-year lease with the Boys and Girls Club, the city was awarded a grant to enclose the bunker, replace the roof, install a roof-top solar panel for hot water heating, install a roof-top playground, and construct game and community rooms inside the bunker. UPARR assistance was the incentive needed to encourage local businesses and non-profit agencies to pitch in and provide the remaining funds for complete adaptation of the bunker. The former coal bunker is the premier youth serving facility. It serves approximately 180 youths a day during the school season, and over 400 a day during summer.

Renovations included handicapped outdoor exercise wheel course, a comparison vita course, an accessible play area, herb/sensory garden, active and passive areas, and parking and path network to the recreation area.

Description: The Near Eastside Neighborhood Recreation Program began in January, 1993. The program offered basketball, football, arts and crafts, a reading club, tutoring, homework studies, a summer camp. The program served youth, ages 8 to 13, averaging 125 per day. Local public and private partnerships were developed through the program between the city parks and recreation department, education department, neighborhood volunteers, and local businesses who provided refreshments and prizes at program functions. High school students from a local technical education program volunteered tutoring assistance during homework and studies program.

Description: The Raritan Bay YMCA expanded its recreation programs to Gelbar Apartment Complex. In partnership with city's park and recreation department, the housing authority, and the Catholic Welfare Bureau, the YMCA was able to provide structured recreation activities to the housing complex. A majority of the residents of the complex were under the age of 18, and unable to travel to public recreation programs offered in other parts of the city. Seeing the need for recreation services, the YMCA expanded its recreation programs to the complex.

Description: An abandoned warehouse was converted into a recreation center. The community center has provided the city of Vineland a tool for reaching out to Vineland's youth population and providing them with structured recreation programs and youth social services. Since the door opened in 1993, over 500 youth have been served. The center has the support of the Polic Athletic League, Martin Luther King Academy, and various local and national private and non-profit organizations.
