Description: A new concept in park maintenance for the city, as three local public agencies, the parks department, planning and community development, and elder affairs counsel, established a senior citizen maintenance corp. to assist the city with the day-to-day maintenance of five municipal parks. 25 Seniors were chosen by lottery and were paid $5 to $6 per hours to maintain five parks. Seniors benefitted from employment, community awareness, and exercise.

Description: An adventure-challenge program designed to enhance a youth's ability to acquire a prositive self-concept, to respect and get along with others, leadership skills, participate in community service projects, and to learn about the environment. The 12-week summer session was targeted to at-risk youth ages 13-16 years old. Each group consisted of 12 participants that met twice a week, plus two overnight trips. Activities included rope course challenge, camping, map and compass reading, rock climbing, biking, backpacking, canoeing, and group problem solving. The primary goal was to alter behavior patters and increase positive self-image. An important ingredient of the program were the partnerships that were created between agencies, schools, and other private and non-profit organizations within the community which required commitment and follow through.
