Description: In innovative approach was developed
for recreation programming - Better Recreation Achievement
for All Generations - or "BRAG" was initiated at the Martin
Luther King Center and the Washington Park Recreation Center,
two densely populated low-income neighborhoods with a large
number of at-risk youth. The recreation programs incorporated
activities to increase self-esteem, self-confidence, and self-awareness,
along with anti-drug and gang seminars, homework and tutoring
assistance, and recreation activities such as karate classes,
exercise classes, and basketball. In 1996, five youth basketball
teams representing the two recreation centers successfully
participated in state-wide basketball tournaments.

abuse, and teen pregnancy problems. To address those problems,
the Washington Park community developed an intergenerational
program that serve children, teens and seniors. It is an after-school
program for 40 latchkey elementary school children who are
mentored by teens and seniors. Teens serve as recreation leaders
and assist with homework and tutoring the children, seniors
serve as "grandparents" and work with youth in all aspects
of the program.
