In the spring of 1863, after careful planning, General Ulysses S. Grant undertook a bold campaign to capture the Confederate stronghold of Vicksburg, Mississippi. After a series of several battles and a 47-day siege of the city, the Confederate army surrendered to Grant on July 4, 1863.
Ulysses S. Grant National Historic Site is commemorating the 150th anniversary of this important Civil War victory in an event on June 29, 2013 at 2:00 p.m. The event will include a flag parade by boy and girl scouts around the home, a presentation highlighting the significant milestones of the campaign, and a guest speaker. Mr. Rocky Sickmann, former Marine sergeant and one of the 52 Americans held hostage in 1979 and 1980 for 444 days will be the guest speaker.
