The Seventh Annual Conference in Celebration of the life of JUAN BAUTISTA DE ANZA will return again this year to Arizpe, Sonora, Mexico. The dates for this year's symposium are May 2-5, 2002. Conference attendees from the United States will board vans on the morning of May 2nd in Tucson, Arizona and will travel to Arizpe visiting Anza's presidio at Tubac Arizona, his mother's grave at Guevavi, Arizona, and the ruins of the Cocóspera Mission in Sonora on the way. Friday, May 3rd will be a day of formal presentations of new research material relative to Anza and his era, interspersed with opportunities for visits to the cathedral, the ruins of the military hospital, Carmen Pellat's museum, the cemetery, and the beautiful Sonora River. The following day, Saturday, May 4th, will include a trip to the Cajón de Piedra Lisa (Slick Rock Canyon) where Anza, five soldiers, a half dozen mule packers, and a heavily laden pack string managed to escape from attacking Apaches during the full moon of May 1, 1768. This field trip will include riding in the vans to a point near this rugged canyon, shuttling over the top of the ridge in the backs of pickup trucks, and a three-quarter-mile hike down the stunningly beautiful canyon. That afternoon, after lunch back in Arizpe, the group will travel up river to the see the compuerta (diversion system) cut into solid rock in 1717 to supply Arizpe's irrigation water, a system still in use today. Sunday, May 5th will include Mass in the cathedral and lunch at the Cajón de Jiósari on the return trip to Tucson. All lodging and meals will be provided by the wonderful people of Arizpe.

*Note: Full information and the finalized conference agenda will be sent to you after registration closes on April 1, 2002. We will all have to pick up Mexican Visas when we cross the international border, which will be an added expense of $20 - $25, depending on the exchange rate in May. Although Arizpe was capital of the vast "Provincias Internas" in Anza's day, it is a small town today. Located on the Sonora River, it has running water and electricity, but if you have need of a special diet or medication you will have to bring it with you. Since accommodations are limited, all attendees will stay with host families. Breakfast will be provided by the host families and all other meals will be provided by the town civic organizations, either on the town plaza or in the cattlemen's hall. This will be a total cultural immersion. For adventurous people with an interest in history and culture it is an absolute must!
