Phelipe Segesser Jhs Minro de Doctrina por su Majestad
I, Phelipe Segesser1 of the Company of Jesus, Missionary for His Majesty in this district of San Miguel de los Ures and Rector of the Mission of San Xavier, certify that I have heard it resolutely said many times by the late Lord Governor and Captain General of these provinces before his death2 that he desired that Don Juan Bautista de Anza should marry, not with the lady who now desires to be his wife, but with another who now is already married to another man.  However, the said deceased Lord Governor who enjoys God’s presence, arranged to charge me with, if solicited, placing Don Juan Bautista de Anza in a state of matrimony, both before and after he obtained the office of captain of the Royal Presidio of Tubac, although I did not make it known at that time. For this it is evident and by certain permission, the said deceased Lord Governor, Don Juan de Mendoza had given license for him to marry, although he desired to know that he was in agreement.  It now appears to me that it will be agreeable to God that the said Lord Captain Don Juan Bautista de Anza should marry Doña Ana María Perez who desires to be his wife, for which reason I add this certification to the petition3 of the said Lord Captain in all the solemnity that must follow its faithful presentation.  In Ures, on the thirteenth of May in the year 1761.
Phelipe Segesser, Jesuit Minister
of Doctrine for His Majesty

1Father Segesser, originally from Switzerland, had long been a friend of the Anza Family, having worked closely with Juan Bautista de Anza, Senior.
2Juan de Mendoza, Governor of Sonora, had died on 27 November, 1760, from an arrow wound in the throat, suffered while in combat against the Seri Indians.
3Anza first started putting together his petition to be married, which required the approval of his commanding officer, the Captain General and Governor of Sonora, in April. Both Salvador de la Peña, Jesuit missionary at Cucurpe, and Phelipe Segesser wrote in his behalf.  He added their letters to his own statement, written at Tubac on 1 June, 1761.  The entire package was forwarded to Martín Cayetano Perez de Peralta, the governor’s scribe, at San Miguel de Horcasitas, who formally wrote up the petition and presented it to long-time friend of the Anza family and acting governor, Bernardo de Urrea.  Urrea gave his official approval for the marriage in Horcasitas on 8 June, 1761.
