How to Make a Pump Drill

Children using the pump drill at La Fiesta de Tumacacori.Materials:
1/2 " dowel (18 " long)
strong string (approximately one foot )
1/4” thick scrap of wood (7 1/2” long)
wooden disc (1 1/4” by 3 1/2” diameter)

Tools:
saw, drill, glue and file

Directions:
1) Construct part “A” by hammering a nail into the dowel part way.  Remove the head and file four sides to a point.
2)  Construct parts “B” and “C.”
3)  Glue disk “B” on “A” two inches from the bottom as indicated
4) Thread the string through one end-hole in “C”, up through the hole in “A”, and back through the other hole in “C.”  Knot the string or strap below each end hole.

To Drill:  Twist part "C" until the string is tightly wound.  Slowly and with little pressure push down.  Ease off toward the bottom and let it come back up on its own momentum.  Like a yo-yo, it's all in the rhythm!!
