Tule Lake Unit Begins Tours

Tule Lake Unit, WWII Valor in the Pacific National Monument

Tulelake, CA – World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument, Tule Lake Unit began giving the first of its on-site summer tours on Saturday, May 16th. On Dec. 5, 2008 President Bush, designated the former Tule Lake Segregation Center and Camp Tulelake (former CCC camp, prisoner of war, Japanese American confinement site), as one of the nine areas identified as part of the World War II Valor in the Pacific National Monument.

The tours were given as part of the US Fish & Wildlife Service’s Migratory Bird Festival. The tours of the Camp Tulelake site included history of the Civilian Conservation Corps, Japanese American Segregation and confinement, as well as the use of the site as a German and Italian prisoner war camp. The camp which is one of two sites for the new unit is an on-going preservation project for the Klamath Basin Wildlife Refuge Association and the tours were arranged to promote the new monument as well as to recruit volunteers for the on-going preservation efforts.
