To celebrate the importance of historic preservation, the National Park Service will offer Tuskegee University campus tours on May 17, 18, 24 & 25 at 10:30 a.m. The focus will be on those buildings constructed in the early years of Tuskegee Institute during the Booker T. Washington administration.
The necessity of self-sufficiency went hand in hand with the skill-based curriculum that Tuskegee Institute was based on from the late 1800s until the mid-1900s. Students learned brick masonry techniques and the art of construction. Their implementation of these skills and the results of Washington's required high standards can be seen today in the quality of buildings on the campus.
Tuskegee Institute National Historic Site will join thousands of individuals across the country to celebrate National Preservation Month this May. "See! Save! Celebrate!" is the theme of the month-long celebration sponsored by the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
Participants should gather at the Oaks, the home of Booker T. Washington, where the preservation program will begin.
