Strategic Focus
Category I

The NPS owns and operates approximately 8000 miles of roads and 1861 bridges in a wide variety of urban and rural locations. Category I provides for the repair, resurfacing, rehabilitation and reconstruction of roadways. Strategic goals for Category I are: to ensure that major roads and bridges throughout the NPS are in "acceptable" condition; to improve safety by using current design standards; and to apply sound asset management strategies to protect and reduce lifecycle costs.

Category II

Category II program funds are used to build Congressionally mandated parkways. Four of the six parkways have been completed. The remaining projects include the continuation of construction of the Foothills Parkway's "missing link"; and begins the construction of multi-use trails around three urban areas along the Natchez Trace Parkway. These projects are expected to be completed within the next twenty years. Category II funding is expected to be $3-10 million annually, over the next six years.
