Universal Competencies Defined

The Universal Competencies identified in the NPS Career Planning and Tracking Kit are:

Mission Comprehension, Agency Orientation, Resource Stewardship, Fundamental Values, NPS Operations, Communication Skills, Problem-solving Skills, and Individual Development and Planning. Additional information about these competencies is available at www.nps.gov/training.

Competencies assessed in this survey include competencies that cross-over between career fields, such as environmental leadership (Maintenance); accessibility and diversity (Visitor Use Management); and leadership (Supervision, Management and Leadership). These and other cross-over competencies have been included in the Universal Competencies Needs Assessment. They may be addressed in greater depth in future career-field specific needs assessments.
