Resource Stewardship       With each specific task I perform at work I can now see beyond the task to its importance in fulfilling our purpose as protectors and guardians of history and the environment.
- Course Participant
This competency requires an overall understanding of the spectrum of resources protected by the NPS; the range of NPS responsibilities in managing these resources; the individual's role in resource stewardship; the planning process and its purpose in the NPS; and working with partners outside the agency to promote resource stewardship.

The strong commitment to resource stewardship came through loud and clear in participant comments, especially among employees who have resource stewardship as a primary responsibility, Many others, though, work in supportive roles like administration and maintenance and sometimes forget the critical role they play in protecting natural and cultural resources. For those folks, Compass served as an important reminder of their real purpose. Before participating in Compass II, respondents had an average knowledge of 2.4 in this competency. After the training, the number rose to 3.7.

Eighty-two percent of respondents "very often" or "all of the time" appreciate their roles as stewards of NPS resources as a result of Compass II. Eighty-five percent now promote resource protection and stewardship. Further, 81% work with partners effectively and supportively, also as a result of the course.
