I like to think that I came away with the idea that no problem is too big or tough for me to handle in my position as long as I take the time to analyze it and approach it in the right way.          This competency deals with the ability to analyze a problem, build consensus, make decisions, and practice innovation in various aspects of one's job. Before participating in Compass, participants gave themselves a relatively high rating on their problem-solving skills: 3.3. Post-course, the number was only nominally higher: 3.9.

Two of the behavioral descriptors relate tangentially to problem-solving skills. Seventy percent of respondents said they now contribute positively to an environment which motivates others to achieve shared goals, and 81% said they now work with partners effectively and supportively. Both of these behaviors have large problem-solving components associated with them. 

Compass II instructors are required to incorporate interactive components into their sessions. Many of these components take the form of problem-solving exercises relating to the subject at hand. This learn-by-doing approach is integral for topics such as this, where there are no concrete answers and flexibility is the key. 

Several respondents suggested that problem-solving skills would be an appropriate topic for further developmental training in the Universal Competencies.
