Dedication

Park Ranger Steve Makuakane-Jarrell served as a "Compass II: Today's Leaders, Tomorrow's Legends" Course Coordinator from December 1997 to December 1999. His special session which he enjoyed teaching the most was "Personal Responsibility and Leadership." Steve was shot and killed on duty at Kaloko-Honokohau National Historical Park on December 12, 1999. He wrote the following message to his fellow coordinators who were meeting at the Albright Training Center on December 8.

A big aloha from Hawaii!

I'm sorry I couldn't attend the HOAL instructors and coordinators course. But, although I'm not there with you, I wish everyone great success in the soon-to-be-upgraded Compass II course.

Without a doubt, the core purpose of Compass has been very worthwhile to the Service. We have indeed spread the word of what the NPS is about and why we exist. Over the last two years, I'm sure that even many of the "old hands" variety participants went away with more understanding (and, yes, to use the "a" word, appreciation) of what they're doing on a day-to-day basis in the organization.

I do miss everyone, but we'll all get together very soon. Remember, in the NPS we don't ever say good-bye, but "I'll see ya later!"

Mahalo,

Steve @KAHO

We dedicate the "Compass II" training program to Steve. "See ya later" and mahalo.
