OFFSET PRESS OPERATOR

Essential Competencies

ENTRY LEVEL

Description: Performs standardized setups and adjustments, maintenance, and operating procedures to produce printed products from offset printing under the supervision of a journeyman-level Offset Pressman.

I. Technical

A. Press setup adjustments/operation
B. Press maintenance
C. Minor repairs/parts replacement
D. Transportation of materials/supplies/printed products
E. Quality control
F. Safety
G. Hazmat
H. Printing on various stock material

II. Inter/Intra-Personal Skills

A. Team Skills

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Ability to select and use tools

Ability to follow/interpret written and oral instructions and specifications

Skills, knowledge and ability to print on various material

Skills, knowledge and ability to (assist in) operating, making adjustments, and setup on an on-line systems press

Ability to follow manufactures guidelines and perform general maintenance and clean up of a systems press

Skills and ability to print multipage documents, forms, letterheads, and technical reports with illustration and maps

Skills and ability to print products with laser solids, screen tints, halftones and lines

Familiarity with unique attributes of various stock material

Skills, knowledge, and ability to check printed work for quality, alignment which adheres to printing and binding regulation

Ability to perform all maintenance, adjustments and repairs, and follow safety guidelines

Familiarity with printing ink and fountain solutions

DEVELOPMENTAL LEVEL

Description: With increasing independance, performs standardized setups and adjustments, maintenance, and operating procedures to produce printed products from offset printing.

I. Technical

A. Press setup adjustments/operation

C. Minor repairs/parts replacement
D. Transportation of materials/supplies/printed products
E. Quality Control
F. Safety

Same as entry level, plus:

Ability to interpret more complex written and oral instructions

Ability to train entry-level personnel in certain technical areas

FULL PERFORMANCE LEVEL

Description: Performs standardized setups and adjustments, maintenance, and operating procedures to produce printed products from offset printing

I. Technical

A. Press setup adjustments/operation
B. Press maintenance
C. Minor repairs/parts replacement
D. Transportation of materials/supplies/printed products
E. Quality Control

Same as developmental level, plus:

Ability to train entry and developmental level personnel in all technical areas

Ability to provide outstanding customer service

Ability to make complex decisions independently, including scheduling of work
