Essential Competencies

ENTRY LEVEL

Description: This competency identifies the knowledge and skills required to perform basic preventive maintenance on a selected array of equipment; following scheduling requirements and manufacturer's guidelines; and by using trouble-shooting techniques and proper tool care.

I. Equipment Repair

A. Preventative Maintenance
1. Scheduling
2. Following Manufacturer's Guidelines
3. Routine Servicing

B. Trouble-Shooting
1. Diagnostics
2. Identification of Minor vs. Major Problems
3. Selection of Appropriate Response

C. Repair Responsibilities
1. Helper Activities
2. Cleanup & Tool Care
3. Safety Considerations

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of preventive maintenance scheduling.

Ability to follow manufacturer's guidelines and perform routine scheduling on a limited assortment of equipment.

Knowledge of diagnosing typical equipment failures and causes of failures.

Skill in differentiating major and minor failures, and ability to select appropriate response.

Skill in assisting higher-graded employees in performing equipment repairs, and following safety guidelines.

Ability to clean and care for tools.

DEVELOPMENTAL LEVEL

Description: This competency identifies the knowledge and skills required to perform intermediate level high voltage electrical installation and repair, routine and cyclic preventive maintenance on a selected array of equipment; following and interpreting scheduling requirements and manufacturer's guidelines in a wide variety of situations; and by using trouble-shooting techniques and proper tool care.

All Competencies at the Entry Level, plus:

I.Installation and repair of complete electrical systems with direct supervision

A. Preventive maintenance
1. Scheduling
2. Following/Interpreting Manuf. Guidelines
3. Following/Interpreting appropriate Codes

B. Trouble-Shooting
1. Diagnostics
2. Identification of Minor vs Major Problems

C. Installation and Repair Responsibilities
1. Independent performance of installations and repairs
2. Tool and equipment selection and use
3. Safety Considerations
4.Understanding/Following blueprints, drawings, sketches, codes, regulations and guidelines

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

A. Preventive Maintenance

Ability to interpret and follow a broad assortment of manufacturer's guidelines and perform complex scheduling on a broad variety of equipment.

B. Trouble-Shooting

Knowledge of diagnosing specialized equipment failures.

Ability in identifying correctly specific causes of failures and analyzing corrective actions.

C.Installation and Repair

Skill in performing installations and repairs to provide serviceable product, and to bring equipment back to operation after failure.

Ability to select and evaluate correct materials, tools, meters and equipment.

FULL PERFORMANCE LEVEL

Description: This competency identifies the knowledge and skills required for full performance of installation and repairs, routine, cyclic, and specialized maintenance on all equipment used in a trade or craft.

All Competencies at the Entry and Developmental Levels, plus:

I. Equipment Repair

A. Preventive Maintenance Development and Implementation

B. Trouble-shooting
1. Diagnostics Instructor Capabilities

C. Installation and Repair Responsibilities
1. Leading Performance of complex installations and Repairs
2. Identification, selection and/or fabrication of repair parts
3. Safety Considerations for others
4. Calibration, adjustment and/or modification of equipment and tools

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

A. Preventive Maintenance

Ability to independently develop and establish preventive maintenance schedules for a broad variety of equipment.

B. Trouble-Shooting

Ability to instruct lower level employees in diagnoses of specialized equipment failure.

C. Installation and Repair

Skill in leading other employees through complex installation, troubleshooting and repair sequences; identifying, selecting and procuring construction and repair parts; and fabrication or assembly of complex repair parts.

Ability to calibrate, adjust, and modify testing equipment and tools for precise use in construction and repair activities.
