NPS Mission and History
In NPS Fundamentals I, you learn how the National Park Service began and grew, how you fit in the NPS, and how the NPS fits into the larger picture of the Federal Government. You will also learn about your own park or office and its features, policies, and organization.
NPS Fundamentals I is divided into three modules:
- The History of the National Park Service

Learn about the history of the National Park Service, from the national park idea and the creation of the National Park Service and how the Park Service has changed over time.
- Local Orientation

Starting with the director’s office, see how the park service is organized from the Washington Office to regions to park units. An introduction is included to some of the park service’s special programs, partners and policies
- The NPS and the Federal Government

All park units are affected by what occurs in Washington, DC, from how a park is created to annual budgets. Take a look at how the park service fits within the Department of Interior, the federal government, and how budgets are developed and passed.
