“NPS Fundamentals is a genuine investment in our agency's most valuable resource - its employees! I strongly advocate every eligible NPS employee attend this crucial, foundational training…”
Director Jon Jarvis
What is NPS Fundamentals?
The NPS Fundamentals program is the centerpiece of a Service-wide on-boarding effort for new NPS employees within their first two years of permanent employment that begins with new employee orientation.
The program is a suite of five-courses, which includes two in-person and three on-line sessions, to be taken ideally within a one-year or less time span. The two in-person sessions include a one week course in Washington DC and a two week course in the Grand Canyon. These courses are offered throughout the year.
The program is designed to welcome new employees to the National Park Service and introduce them to the NPS Universal Competencies and Core Values critical to every employee’s success and accomplishment of the NPS mission.
Why it matters…
NPS Fundamentals training is designed for new permanent employees at all levels and in all vocations. It provides a critical opportunity to network with others throughout the Service. The program provides an orientation to the following areas of NPS:
- its place in the federal government,
- its broad and world renowned focus,
- the roles of the Washington DC Support Office, regional offices, and park offices,
- the critical roles that we (as employees) have, and agency's culture and how we work together.
Who can attend?
New employees within their first two years of Permanent employment. Employees who have started the program (attended at least two course offerings) can continue the program into their third year.
How much does it cost?
It’s free! Tuition, travel, and per diem costs for NPS employees are paid for by Service-wide Learning and Development funds.
