Honeybees attracted to bait dish
"Bee-havior"
There are several active hives of Africanized bees near the Lower and Upper Cliff Dwellings. Visitors who are allergic to bees should carry their medication with them when hiking at Tonto National Monument.
Due to the unpredictable nature of the bees, the dwellings may be closed without notice.
General rules are:
- Wear lighter clothes.
- Avoid perfumes/colognes.
- Avoid sugary drinks or snacks.
- Avoid rapid movements.
- Avoid activity during the hottest part of the day.
Dangerous bee behavior includes:
- Bees knocking against you.
- A pile-up of bees just outside the hive entrance.
- Someone getting stung.
If attacked:
- Keep moving.
- Do not swat.
- Cover your mouth with clothing.
- Remove sunglasses (which attract stinging behavior).
