In the 1700s, Thomas Stone purchased several tracts of land totaling over 440 acres, with the most significant being the tract of Haberdeventure. A rough Latin translation of Haberdeventure is "dwelling place of the winds." It was first documented as the name of the property circa 1682, soon after the first recorded owner John Bearfoot (or Barefoot) purchased it. If you visit the site today, you will notice the house resting on a small rise, where you might feel the cooling breezes from the nearby Port Tobacco River.

Climate

Thomas Stone National Historic Site experiences all four seasons. Summers tend to be hot and humid, with occasional thunderstorms and rainy days. Autumn brings cooler temperatures but is mostly dry. Winters are mild but can bring snow and colder temperatures. Thomas Stone National Historic Site usually has some wind, ranging from a refreshing summer breeze to chilly winter winds.
