Operating Hours & Seasons

The park is open 24 hours a day, year-round.

Portions of the South Unit Scenic Loop Drive and North Unit Scenic Road may be closed in winter due to snow and ice. Click here to check the status of the park roads.

Open daily all year 8:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. MT
Begining June 1 open daily 8:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. MT
Closures - Thanksgiving Day, Christmas Day and New Year's Day

Painted Canyon Visitor Center
Open daily 9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. MT
Begining June 1 open 8:30 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. MT

North Unit Visitor Center
Open daily 9:00 a.m. - 5:30 p.m. CT

CAMPGROUNDS:

Cottonwood Campground
Open all year. Limited services from October 1 to mid-May. Fees collected year-round.

Juniper Campground
Open all year. Limited services from October 1 to mid-May. Fees collected year-round.

The Little Missouri River began to carve the badlands about 600,000 years ago during the Pleistocene Epoch. The river formerly ran to Hudson Bay, but the glaciers diverted it into the Missouri River. More...
