National Park to Celebrate Presidents’ Day Weekend with Roosevelt Film

Theodore Roosevelt National Park and the Theodore Roosevelt Nature and History Association will celebrate Presidents’ Day Weekend with a special viewing of “Theodore Roosevelt: A Cowboy’s Ride to the White House” on Saturday, February 19 at 1:30 p.m. MST in the South Unit Visitor Center.  

The critically acclaimed documentary, by producer/writer Darrell Dorgan, is the compelling story of the young Harvard-educated son of a well-to-do New York family, who first came to the Dakota Badlands in 1883 to hunt bison. While here, Roosevelt spent long days on horseback, slept outside in the rain, bought a cattle ranch, and observed dwindling wildlife populations. His time here greatly influenced his ideas about conservation and his presidency; he called it “the romance of my life.” The movie was filmed on location in the heart of the North Dakota Badlands.

The Saturday Matinee event is sponsored by the Theodore Roosevelt Nature and History Association as part of its yearlong 60th Anniversary celebration; old time theater refreshments will be served. Darrell Dorgan will introduce the film and will be available to answer questions after the viewing.  

Tours of Theodore Roosevelt’s Maltese Cross Cabin will be offered at 10:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. on Saturday, Sunday and Monday, February 19 - 21, at the South Unit Visitor Center. Encore viewings of the movie will be offered on Sunday and Monday at 2:00 p.m. MST in the South Unit Visitor Center and at 3:00 p.m. CST in the North Unit Visitor Center.
