The repair and construction of the scenic drive in the North Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park has been completed. Construction started on June 22 and continued throughout the summer. The project involved the complete rebuilding of 5.4 miles of the road and the double chip seal of the remaining 8.5 miles. The project, a joint effort with the Federal Highways Administration, was all-inclusive. In addition to bringing the road up to current safety standards, wetlands and erosion mitigation, and treatment of non-native plants were factored into the design. Paved pullouts along the road now meet Americans With Disabilities Act (ADA) standards. Seeding of native plants in the rights of way on either side of the road is scheduled for fall of 2010. Funding for the project was through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. “We are very pleased that the construction project has been completed,” said Superintendent Valerie Naylor. “The old road surface was worn out and was badly in need of repair. It is now a pleasure to drive the North Unit road and will be for a long time to come.” The North Unit road will remain open for travel during the winter months as weather conditions permit. --NPS-- View Full News Release
