Annual Bird Walk and Breakfast to be Held in
Theodore Roosevelt National Park

The Theodore Roosevelt Nature and History Association invites birders of all ages and experience levels to participate in the 57th Annual Bird Walk on Sunday, June 5.The walk will start at 6:30 a.m. MDT in the Cottonwood Picnic Area in the South Unit of Theodore Roosevelt National Park.

Because of recent flooding in Cottonwood Campground, the meeting place for the walk will be in the picnic area, but the bird walk will still take place in familiar areas. The casual one-hour stroll will meander along the Little Missouri River in search of as many bird species as possible. Each year, 40-50 species are heard and seen during this popular event.

Following the walk, the Theodore Roosevelt Nature and History Association will host its annual Chuck Wagon Breakfast at the Cottonwood Picnic Area, which is adjacent to the campground. Buttermilk pancakes, country sausage, cowboy coffee and juice will be served beginning at 8:00 a.m. A free-will donation is suggested to help defray expenses of the meal. Those interested in attending the breakfast should make reservations in order to assist in planning the event.

"The number of birds utilizing the recently flooded areas is astounding," said Superintendent Valerie Naylor."We may find some species and numbers of birds that are unprecedented due to the recent flood events. From white pelicans to warblers, the birds are moving in.We sincerely appreciate the Theodore Roosevelt Nature and History Association's success in keeping this tradition alive for the past 57 years."

As the national park's non-profit partner, the Theodore Roosevelt Nature and History Association sells books and other interpretive materials in the park's visitor centers.Proceeds are donated to the park to support interpretation and research.

Participants should bring binoculars, field guides, and keen eyes to help record the day's sightings, and should be prepared for any kind of weather. To make reservations for the breakfast, call 701-623-4730 ext 3419 or e-mail info@trnha.org.
