Theodore Roosevelt Inside and Out

Participants explore one of America's most influential presidents, how he is linked to their home city, and what he can teach us about the enjoyment of the natural world. As President, Theodore Roosevelt sought to protect natural wonders for future generations. During this museum tour with a conservation focus visiting students will learn about the natural spaces open to them, from National Parks to their local community park or garden.

During their visit, students will tour the park site, learning of how and why Theodore Roosevelt assumed office in 1901, and exploring the impact of his presidency upon the nation regarding conservation of the environment. Differing perspectives on conservation at the time will be presented, from conservationists such as John Muir, to business leaders seeking to use natural resources for development.

Students will then explore the grounds of the TR Site, examining historic photos of the property and viewing the current grounds from the same perspective, comparing the historic and present views. They will document the similarities and differences they see from historic images, and theorize why differences exist.

The program will also address the importance of green space in an urban environment, a cause that relates closely to Roosevelt's efforts to conserve natural wonders for future generations, and his sense of the importance of appreciation for nature. It also relates to Roosevelt's concerns about living conditions in the nation's cities, and the efforts of period leaders such as Frederick Law Olmsted, who designed the Buffalo park system.

Scheduling Instructions:

Recommended for: grades 4 -5.

Program length: 3 1/2 hours. Includes time for a lunch break.

Tour size: from 10 to 50 maximum.

Fee: $3.00 per student for organized school groups.

Reservations: All group tours are by reservation only. Please call 716-884-0095 for reservations. Reservations must be made at least two weeks in advance.

Tour times: Tours can start as early as 9:15 weekdays or as early as 12:15 weekends. No program can start after 2:00 PM.

We recommend one chaperone for each 10 students.
