The exhibit galleries are currently closed for renovation. These renovations will improve preservation of artifacts as well as enhance the visitor experience.

Pelican Island was proclaimed the first U.S. National Wildlife Refuge by President Theodore Roosevelt on March 14, 1903. This action was taken by the president to protect the island's birds from plume hunters. It also contributed to T.R. being known as one of the world's greatest conservationists.
