Lesson Plan

The Physics of Waves

waves crashing against the rocks
Grade Level:
Middle School: Sixth Grade through Eighth Grade
Subject:
Science
Lesson Duration:
60 Minutes
Additional Standards:
NGSS
MS-PS4-1 Use mathematical representations to describe a simple model for waves
that includes how the amplitude of a wave is related to the energy in a wave.

Essential Question

What are waves and how do they work?

Objective

Students will be able to:
● List the types of waves.
● Label parts of a wave.
● Explain how waves travel

Preparation

See each lesson for suggested preparation.

Materials

Students will be looking at how waves play a role in our everyday lives. Students will be looking at transverse and longitudinal waves and be able to label the parts of each.

Students will be looking specifically at light waves. They will be learning about how these waves of light behave around different mediums of matter.

Download Light Waves

Students will take their knowledge of light waves, and organisms in the intertidal zone, and learn how the light affects that ecosystem.
