Chase County Courthouse 1873 - On a clear day, the preserve's ranch buildings can be seen from the courthouse's highest oval window nearly 5.5 miles away.
 

Strong City and Cottonwood Falls Communities

Strong City is located two miles southeast of the historic ranch headquarters area on K-177 (Flint Hills National Scenic Byway). Restaurants, lodging, gasoline, postal services, city park, and a grocery store are available.

Cottonwood Falls is the county seat and is located five miles southeast of the historic ranch headquarters area on K-177 (Flint Hills National Scenic Byway). Restaurants, lodging, gasoline, postal services, camping, two parks, library, museums, and area shops are available.

Did You Know?
Kansas was once the bed of a vast inland sea. The unique, stairstep landscape of the Flint Hills was formed through a process of differential erosion. Erosion washed away the soft shale layers and left the tougher layers of limestone and flint to form the hilltops and prominent benches.
