Hozomeen Duplexes: North Cascades National Park
h6.jpg (49969 bytes)
North Cascades National Park in Washington recently constructed new residential facilities at Hozomeen, near the north end of Ross Lake. Sustainable design principles were used throughout the construction, including:
  • High rated insulation with use of moisture barrier on foundation to protect from moisture and cold intrusion

  • Oriented strand board lumber used in floor joists

  • Timber strand perimeter joists

  • Sectional 2x4's with brackets, using no large timbers for interior framing

  • Wallboard made from recycled paper

  • Insulating "air barrier" (plastic wrap) to keep warm air in

  • Rough sawn plywood made from recycled wood products

  • Timber beams used only on exposed beam ends for better structural engineering, using less materials for interior framing

  • Cedar shakes certified from sustainably managed forests

  • Low-power Hydronic H2O system for radiant heat

  • Carpeting from 85% recycled materials (Envirotech)

  • Sunfrost energy efficient refrigerators

  • Energy efficient lighting

  • Hybrid photovoltaic energy system from Applied Power

  • Green Technologies composter to process food and yard wastes
