Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument
For Teachers

Thank you for your interest in the Flagstaff Area National Monuments Education Program. This includes, Sunset Crater Volcano, Wupatki and Walnut Canyon National Monuments.

National Park Service sites offer wonderful opportunities for students, of all ages, to experience an outdoor classroom. In gaining greater understanding of the earth and its inhabitants, students learn stewardship and preservation ethics. Park Rangers work to preserve and protect monument resources while teaching students about what makes the sites special.

The Flagstaff Area National Monuments is currently in the process of updating the education program. The following materials were designed to assist you in preparing for a class trip to the park(s) as well as offer resources to enhance your educational experience whether you bring your class to the Flagstaff Area Monuments, or want to bring the Flagstaff Area Monuments into your classroom.

Did You Know?
Sunset Crater was nearly dynamited in 1929, to create a landslide for the Hollywood movie "Avalanche". Local citizens were outraged and lobbied for its protection. The result was establishment of Sunset Crater National Monument in 1930. "Volcano" was added to the name in 1990.
