    Sunset Crater Volcano Web Quest

    This web-based activity will guide the students through a few of the concepts associated with volcanism and then walk the students through a virtual tour of the monument while helping the students learn about the processes that make this area so unique. Students will conduct an internet based inquiry investigation focusing on understanding what causes volcanoes, what are some volcano hazards, and examples of volcanoes from around the world.

    The Bean Lab: Grades 2-5

    In "The Bean Lab", students will compare how native food plants grow at three culturally historic places near Flagstaff, Arizona. Students will plant and grow Hopi Black Beans in three different soil types taken from areas near Walnut Canyon National Monument, Wupatki National Monument, and Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument. All materials will be supplied to interested teachers.

The eruption of Sunset Crater Volcano must have been a powerful event. It destroyed all plants within a 5-mile radius. A fountain of fire, 850 feet high, was visible for miles around. An ash cloud rose 2.5 miles into the sky, and falling ash covered about 64,000 acres.
