Volunteer Training

The National Park Service (NPS) provides training for its volunteers to increase safety and support and enhance the Volunteers-In-Parks experience.

Most training for volunteers is currently offered through DOI Talent, which requires NPS network access via a Personal Identity Verification (PIV) card. The following training opportunities are currently available to National Park Service volunteers without NPS network access.

NCSP Introduction to Chainsaw Operations & Safety

Per NPS Policy, all Volunteers who intend to operate chainsaws on NPS lands (see exceptions below), regardless of experience level, must complete this foundational required course for the NPS National Chainsaw Safety Program (NCSP) before seeking qualification as a Sawyer, Working Faller, Journey Level Faller, or Master Faller. Once you fulfill all required prerequisites and competencies as outlined in this course, you may request qualification review by an NPS Competency Evaluator.

Exceptions

  • Volunteers who qualify under the USFS MOU will follow all standards identified by USFS policy.
  • Anyone with PIV access should complete this course (NPS-RSK4000) on DOI Talent through a DOI computer (link will not work from non-DOI computers). Completion of the course in DOI Talent is recorded in the user's official training record.
