aThe Pasquotank River runs between Pasquotank and Camden Counties in northeast North Carolina. The river flows past Elizabeth City to the Albemarle Sound. The Albemarle Sound runs into the Atlantic Ocean. The Great Dismal Swamp Canal, completed in 1805, connects the Cheaspeake Bay in Virginia via the Elizabeth River and the Albermarle Sound via the Pasquotank River. During the antebellum period in northeast North Carolina, rivers, canals, and sounds were not only essential for commerce and shipping, but played an important role in assisting enslaved African Americans to freedom via vessels and ships on route to northern states, Canada, and the Caribbean.
