Freedom Park

Freedom Park is near the site of a Contraband camp where freedom seekers found refuge.  It is also near the site where the Second Arkansas Infantry of African descent helped defend the city in July 1863 when the Confederates tried unsuccessfully to recapture the city.  Helena was a destination for freedom seekers; it was a secure area where formerly enslaved people could find work and refuge from their former masters.
