It is the intent of this program to create a cohesive and historically accurate story of the role of Lancaster County in Pennsylvania's Quest for Freedom, highlighting sites, actors, and communities of significance on the Underground Railroad. Stories of Freedom Seekers, abolitionists and events such as the Christiana Resistance combine to tell a compelling narrative of this area just north of the Mason Dixon Line. Connections to surrounding communities such as Gettysburg, York & Philadelphia are woven throughout the tour narrative. The Pennsylvania Quest for Freedom: Lancaster County Tour was introduced in 2006, following three years of extensive research and development conducted through a partnership of the Pennsylvania Tourism Office, the Pennsylvania Dutch Convention & Visitors Bureau, regional tourism partners, and the Pennsylvania Historical Museum Commission.
