Maria and Nelson Gant were from Loudoun County, VA; when Nelson was freed, by VA law he was forced to leave Maria behind to go to OH. There he saved money to redeem his wife from enslavement, but his offers to buy her were refused. She mysteriously disappeared; they were found together in DC, and he was tried in Leesburg for "slave stealing." She was not forced to testify against Nelson, because the judge recognized her marriage to Nelson; other testimony was weak, absolving Nelson. She and her husband then migrated to Zanesville, OH.
