For forty years, John and Jean Rankin led their Ripley, Ohio neighbors in feeding, clothing, and sheltering hundreds of freedom seekers.

John Rankin, a Presbyterian minister, organized antislavery groups on the local and state level. The Rankin home, which overlooks the Ohio River, was fittingly known as "Liberty Hill."
