To commemorate the 150th Anniversary of the Civil War, the Youth Ambassador Program (YAP!) created a song about the 54th Massachusetts Regiment. Nearly 50 men from New Bedford, Massachusetts enlisted in the 54th. The recruitment station was one block from the New Bedford Whaling National Historical Park's Visitor Center. One of those enlisted men was Sergeant William H. Carney, the first African American to earn a Congressional Medal of Honor.
