Mary Elizabeth Jones was my great-great grandmother. She was born in 1844 near Pisgah in Jackson County, Alabama. Her daughter (my mother's grandmother) told my mother that Mary Elizabeth drove escaping slaves from Jones Cove to the Tennessee River, where they were met by a boat and taken across the river. She said that as a young girl, no one suspected her, and carrying a load of hay grown on her father's farm was a normal activity. Of course, escaping slaves were under the load of hay.
